Dr. Chrystle Cu, a dentist, started the company Cocolab with her sister in 2015. Together, they created Cocofloss, a luxury dental floss brand that uses unique scents to entice more people to floss.
Cocofloss was featured in Vogue, Goop, and The Strategist. It also won the Cellerant Best of Class Hygiene Award twice for its innovative approach to an often-overlooked aspect of oral health.
This uniquely scented, eco-friendly floss combines sustainability and general dentistry like no other floss on the market. Besides dental floss, Cocolab also sells:
Cocofloss has a textured, loofah-like weave of 500+ filaments. The coconut oil and essential oils in this popular alternative floss also make flossing fun to prevent gum disease.
Cocofloss selects its ingredients carefully. It comes in many different flavors aside from mint. Dr. Cu chose fruits she thought would entice more people, including kids, to floss, such as:
Cocofloss is also:

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends flossing once per day.6
Per Mouth Healthy experts, you use 18 inches of floss per session, including flossing both your upper and lower jaws.7
Cocofloss is not biodegradable. It is made from:
The naturally sourced mint flavor in Cocofloss includes:
Cocofloss contains microcrystalline wax. This vegan wax joins coconut oil and various fragrances in coating the base polyester fibers that differentiate Cocofloss from other flosses.
Many Amazon reviews included notes that Cocofloss came at the recommendation of a trusted dentist.
Cocofloss’s Happiness Set shipped quickly and arrived in minimal packaging. I was immediately drawn to the pastel yet vibrant colors on the creamy white box that easily fit in my hand. A gentle lift of the top flat revealed four petite boxes of different floss flavors, including:
Each case of floss is the same color as the packaging it comes in. The pure strawberry flavor came in a pink box and has a darker pink case. While I could smell the different flavors once I put the cases to my nose, they weren’t overpowering.
Pulling floss out of the small cases doesn’t require much force and the floss breaks cleanly. I can easily see myself putting a case or two in my purse for on-the-go flossing. Plus, the floss doesn’t leave a waxy residue on my fingers or my teeth and the spools are easy to replace.
As I began flossing with Cocofloss, I noticed the smell more than the taste. My brain wanted the floss to taste like the scent and was a bit confused when I got just a hint of mint flavor. I didn’t taste the coconut oil at all.
I have rather tight teeth and the Cocofloss easily fit between them without much tugging. I did get the Cocofloss to fray a bit, but it was on my sharpest teeth and it didn’t show the slightest signs of breaking. Instead, the strands simply unwove to a gauze-like form.
The polyester fibers within Cocofloss retain a rope-like shape that makes it easier and more comfortable to floss in even the tightest spaces. Cocolab also makes a Threader to use with braces, bridges, and implants.
Cocofloss costs $10 for a two-month supply of 33 yards if you choose a single scent. However, you can also purchase the Happiness Set with a similar supply for $36. This set includes four different scents of eight yards each.
You can purchase a refill trio for $24 to receive 33 yards of floss without the outer case. If you want the outer casing, the same trio will cost you $27. Cocofloss also offers the Favorites Sampler, which includes 33 yards of a single scent and eight yards each of two additional scents.
Flossing with Cocofloss was much more enjoyable than any flossing I’ve done in the past. My gums may have bled but they felt cushioned by the Cocofloss. Perhaps it’s the kid in me, but I almost look forward to flossing when I use Cocofloss.
I want to try the dark chocolate and vanilla bean scents in the future. Though Cocofloss does cost more than store-brand floss, I am glad to trade a few more dollars for a more enjoyable and rewarding experience. With the help of Cocofloss, I enjoy taking care of my gum health and supporting sustainable and eco-friendly causes.

Amazon customers strongly favor Cocofloss with a rating above four stars. Many honest reviews incorporate compliments on the fun flavors but some people were underwhelmed by the strawberry-scented dental floss and the unnecessary expense of this particular product.
“The quality and thickness of the floss is great and you can see the passion this company has for their products. Great packaging as well.”8
Deb from the United States
“When I saw this the price was a deterrent, but I had to try it. Glad I did. It was exactly what I was looking for.”8

In contrast, Duby A. from Cocofloss’ website writes,
“It is a terrible product; it tears, breaks, and I had to use my Glide floss o [sic] get out the shredded coco floss left between my teeth.”9
“Strawberry floss did not taste smell [sic] like strawberry at all. Super disappointed.” Kelly chimes in with, “The floss strands are big and do not fit between my teeth unless I force them, which you are not supposed to do with floss. It damages the gums. If I force it between my teeth, it shreds so badly when I pull it back out.”9
Sheila C.
In her Amazon review, Kristin B. notes,
“As a dental hygienist I was excited to try this floss everyone is talking about.” She goes on to say, “I enjoy using it, and it makes my teeth feel very clean. No one else in my family likes it. They have a hard time getting it in between their teeth, which is typical of most people who don’t floss others [sic] teeth everyday [sic].”8
Cocofloss is worth the investment for those seeking a sustainable, stronger, and more natural flossing material. However, some people may find the scents, packaging, and overall image of this product and the Cocolab company to be gimmicky and overwrought.
Flossing is an essential part of any oral hygiene routine. It removes plaque, keeps your gums healthy, and makes your breath smell better.1 If a fruity flavor would make you more likely to floss, you may want to try Cocofloss’s products.
Cocofloss doesn’t leave you with a waxy residue or coconut oil on your fingers or teeth. Flavoring takes a back seat to scent with Cocofloss, while store-bought dental floss tends to taste strongly of mint.
Cocofloss combines the strength of flossing picks with the leverage necessary to get between crowded teeth. This thicker luxury floss resists tearing compared to common dental flosses.
Cocolab aims to address the abundance of plastic and minimize its impact on our natural resources. It uses recycled materials in its products, including 85% polyester spun from recycled water bottles to make the floss.
Their collaborations and sustainability efforts include:
Cocofloss sells floss refills on refillable spools, removing the need for additional packaging. The refills are shipped in compostable cellulose packaging.3

If you’re unsure about Cocofloss, you can try other dental flosses. Here are a few alternative products:
RiseWell makes many dental health products, including floss. Its Scrubby Floss offers many of the same benefits, such as:
RiseWell Scrubby floss is cheaper than Cocofloss at $8 a package. However, it only comes in mint flavor.
Another effective natural floss is DrTung’s Smart Floss. The brand is eco-friendly and uses zero-plastic packaging. Their floss is also PFAS and PBTE-free.
DrTung’s can be a good option if you don’t want a fruity taste. The Smart Floss comes in a unique cardamom flavor.
EcoRoots makes dental floss from bamboo fiber for a natural, zero-waste alternative to traditional floss. It comes in a refillable glass container and is completely compostable.
The ingredients include organic vegan wax, peppermint essential oils, and activated charcoal. The price point is similar to Cocofloss, at $9.99 per bottle.
Cocofloss sheds light on how sustainability efforts can go hand-in-hand with fun oral health. This eco-friendly luxury dental floss checks all the right boxes when it comes to protecting the environment and prioritizing oral health for all ages. While you might pay extra for the eco-conscious mission statement, Cocofloss products hold their own as a go-to flossing product.
