Safest Teeth Whiteners
The safest ways to whiten your teeth explained
Whitening systems have come a long way from hard-to-apply whitening strips of the early 2000s to expensive in-office treatments.
Meet Hismile, an Australian company founded in 2014 with the intention to “create an at-home teeth whitening treatment that's just as effective as peroxide – without the nasty side effects.”

Hismile’s Research Centre is home to constant innovation and continued testing. Behind the scenes content of research and product development showcase the brand’s commitment to transparency. Their PAP+ Whitening Strips remain a best-seller, with the PAP+ Teeth Whitening Kit a close second.
Every product from Hismile is formulated peroxide-free. Peroxide can be an aggressive bleaching agent with negative side effects for some users. These include sensitivity, irritated gums, and the loss of minerals in teeth. Side effects can be mitigated during in-chair treatments, but are harder to monitor at home.
In the place of peroxide, Hismile focuses on phthalimidoperoxycaproicacid (PAP) as its primary whitening ingredient. It offers the same whitening power with zero impact on gums or enamel.1

“PAP is used as a bleaching activator for teeth whitening by whitening the discolored molecules that are in your teeth,” shares Dr. Roshan Parikh, CDO at dntl bar.
Besides PAP, Hismile’s Teeth Whitening kit uses nHAp and potassium citrate. “The inclusion of a nano-particle apatite (nano-hydroxyapatite) and potassium citrate offer certain additional benefits to the teeth during the whitening process, such as improved enamel structure and the reduction of pre-existing tooth sensitivity,” Dr. Parikh shares.
According to Elizabeth Graves, a registered dental hygienist, "The ingredient PAP isn't more widely used in whitening products because it is relatively new to the dental industry. Some dental professionals and most of the general public have not even heard of it before.”
She goes on to share that “with the promising research coming out about its effectiveness and safety, PAP will surely be replacing hydrogen peroxide in whitening treatments."
nHAp remineralizes and repairs teeth. Over time, this ingredient grows stronger, more resilient teeth against tooth decay. Potassium citrate protects pre-existing sensitivity while preventing new sensitivities from developing.
According to a study published in 2021, PAP works to whiten teeth without adverse effects on tooth enamel.2
Another study points to the way nano-hydroxyapatite “has significant remineralizing effects on initial enamel lesions, certainly superior to conventional fluoride, and good results on the sensitivity of the teeth.”3
Every Hismile Teeth Whitening Kit includes an LED Device, a mouth tray, six Teeth Whitening Pods, and a shade guide.
The Hismile Teeth Whitening Kit is best used after two minutes of toothbrushing. From there, follow these steps:
It’s important to note that Hismile products are safe to use on dental restorations, including fillings, veneers, crowns, bridges, bonds, and implants. But keep in mind that restorations can’t be color-corrected like real teeth.
I used the Hismile Teeth Whitening Kit two times, though results were visible after my first 10-minute session. The images below are the before and after of my smile.
Following the instructions of the packaging, I brushed my teeth thoroughly before removing the mouth tray to connect to the LED device. Wearing the device for just 10 minutes was notably more comfortable than other whitening processes. Plus, 10 minutes is on the shorter end of at-home treatment times.
Once the blue light switched off automatically, I rinsed the mouth tray and put everything back into its allotted space in the box.
Before trying the Hismile Teeth Whitening Kit, I could notice some yellowing toward the edges of my teeth. This disappeared after two uses of the product and revealed a more even and brighter smile.
As a person with sensitive teeth, I felt apprehensive about integrating a new product into my routine. Thankfully, the Hismile Teeth Whitening Kit did not trigger any sensitivity, as promised.
I was most surprised by the ease of use the product offers. The whitening gel stays neatly within the trays. Not having to set a timer for the 10 minutes is also very helpful.
Replaceable batteries and well-made components make the Hismile Teeth Whitening Kit a worthwhile investment for long-term whitening. Additional whitening gels can be purchased on Hismile’s site.
This product is a fantastic way to experiment with at-home whitening, thanks to its affordability and ease of use. Plus, the immediate results make it a great addition to any pre-event routine.
The included shade guide makes it simple to track visible improvement in your teeth’s whiteness over time. Simply find the shade that matches your natural state, and see where consistent usage of Hismile Teeth Whitening Kit takes you.
After two uses of the kit, I saw that my teeth moved toward a shade lighter. Maintained use for a longer period could provide an even more significant alteration. In fact, Hismile guarantees results up to eight shades whiter after six 10-minute sessions.
While the kit is great for general upkeep, its targeted whitening would make it a great choice leading up to an event. The brand recommends following up with PAP+ Toothpaste or PAP+ Mouthwash for sustained results.
