Reader Question: I think I might have a cavity, but I’m not sure. What are the signs that I need to see a dentist for treatment?

It’s normal to be unsure about whether or not you have a cavity. Sometimes the symptoms aren’t obvious.

Here are the most common signs of a cavity:

  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Toothache
  • Dark spots or discolored areas
  • Bleeding
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Bad breath
  • Pain and discomfort when biting

It’s important to remember that there are potentially other causes for these symptoms, like gingivitis. The best way to determine if you have a cavity and what’s causing it is to visit a dentist.

When should you see a dentist for cavities?

If you think you have a cavity, visit your dentist as soon as possible. Untreated cavities can progress to more serious issues like infection or tooth loss.

However, if a cavity is caught early, your dentist can simply treat it with a filling. They’re also trained to spot the early signs of other dental problems, such as tooth decay and gum disease.

If you’re worried about cost, many dental plans offer coverage for preventive care, like cleanings or fillings. If you don’t have insurance, most dentists offer payment plans and other options to make treatment affordable.
